Even though twelve centuries passed since Imam Ouzai died. His name is always the synonym of religious tolerance, justice and human brotherhood.
Abdul Rahman Ouzai was born at Baalbeck in the year 681 AD. Under the shadows and greatness of Baalbeck's temples, little Ouzai discovered how mediocre are religious fanaticism and human autocracy compared to the everlasting principles of justice, freedom and mercy. Since his childhood imam ouzai was attracted to prayers and contemplation. He discovered that being a good Muslim doesn't mean being a fanatic, on the contrary Islam and fanaticism can't unite. In fact they are against each other. Moreover he was convinced that in the end all men will die and it's only their ideas, principles and acts that'll remain in the memory of human history. Strong by this ideology, imam Ouzai stood alongside with his fellow Lebanese Christians against the cruel Abassides who were ruling Lebanon at that time. After he moved to Beirut, his home was a meeting place for all the Lebanese who came to see him, seeking his knowledge and wise advises. He died in 750AD and was buried in a region called "Hantous" better known today as the "Ouzai Region". There, a mosque was build, "Imam Ouzai Mosque" which contains the tomb of the famous imam. Each year thousands of Lebanese visit the imam mausoleum in quest for blessing and mercy. |
